Week 18 - Shakeology during Pregnancy

18 Weeks Pregnant

This past Saturday I hit the 18 week mark in this pregnancy. 18 weeks?!  How is that even possible?  I thought it was about time I started keeping a record of what is happening throughout these weeks leading up to nugget's arrival (apparently my older sister hates that nickname - she says it reminds her of a chicken nugget.  I have no intention of slathering my child in ketchup, however, so I am going to keep using nugget until we know the real name!)  Knowing the real name won't be for quite a while, though.  Jake and I have decided to not find out the gender until the baby arrives - we're leaving it a surprise!

I know, I know, this is absolutely a CRAZY thought to some people!  I would say about half the people who have heard we're keeping it a surprise looked at us with faces halfway between a grimace and shock - and then kind of smiled and said "oh okay".  We understand this will limit our pink princess or blue monster truck nursery, but truth be told Jake and I wouldn't likely go that route anyway.  We plan to have the same nursery for multiple children down the road, so we'll probably stick to being pretty gender-neutral.

Boy or Girl

The first 16 weeks of being pregnant was, I fully admit, pretty miserable.  I was getting sick pretty much every morning - and then all day as well.  There were a couple insurance snafus which led to me not having enough anti-nausea to be able to take one even once a day, so this made it difficult to really start feeling healthy and good!  Over the last couple weeks, however, we have figured out insurance and I can now take the anti-nausea whenever I need to (but only up to three times a day - don't worry, I'm not popping pills every hour!)  My stress level has definitely gone down because of this and, I'm sure this is part of the reason why I have been feeling much better lately!  I still have a day here or there where I'd love to just be able to camp out on the couch because of feeling ill, but they are much fewer and far between than before - and this makes me happy!

Morning Sickness Quote

I was also given the all clear to start incorporating Shakeology back into my everyday routing and this has been SO wonderful.  I was missing my shake for all those weeks when I couldn't have it - but now I'm back on track and feeling better!  The first doctor I saw recommended that I not continue to drink Shakeology as it hasn't been officially tested on pregnant ladies.  When I switched to a new ob I thought I should at least get his opinion on the shakes.  I felt confident that I could drink them but wanted to listen to my doctor's recommendation.  I will never forget how he took the packet, read the ingredients and honestly laughed out loud!  He said "Of COURSE you can drink this!  Did your old doctor look at what is in here?  This is incredibly healthy and good for you!" (This is only my experience; if you are pregnant and would like to try Shakeology I would definitely recommend you speak to your doctor about it first!) I thought I had been comfortable with not drinking my shakes, but when we left that appointment I was absolutely smiling from ear to ear - I was so excited to go home and have a shake again!  (I do have to mention here - because I went for so many weeks without drinking any shakes, I have a large supply of packets at home!  I would love to be able to share these with you - please email me at ashleykrek@gmail.com if you're interested in trying out Shakeology!)

Shakeology in Pregnancy

Up to this point I have gained a whopping total of 4 pounds.  I think getting so sick in the beginning made gaining much weight nearly impossible; finally in the past couple weeks I have started to put on a bit.  My goal for this pregnancy is to just continue to be healthy and have a healthy baby at the end, of course!  I have read about people who are pregnant and will sit down and eat an entire tub of ice cream or half a chocolate cake - I'm not judging them but that is definitely not how I see my pregnancy going!  That is definitely not healthy whether you're pregnant or not, but it is bad for two people if you are pregnant!

I put off on exercising when I was so sick for a couple reasons:
1) The thought of moving more than I had to made me sick to my stomach - working out was just not in the cards.
2) I was still going to work as often as possible (though I will admit I spent quite a few mornings on the couch and didn't make it into work until lunchtime when I started to feel a little bit better).  After going to work I was so exhausted everyday I would normally fall asleep on the couch before Jake even got home from the farm at 630 or so.  Even staying up that long was a struggle!  He was an incredible help, though, and made dinner every night - whether I could eat it or not!
3) The fact that I was losing weight already made me feel uncomfortable about working out.  I didn't want to lose 20 pounds in the first trimester but I'm afraid I might have if I had been able to stick with a workout routine!

So for those 3 reasons I didn't work out in the beginning.  Now that I have started to feel better, have energy and gain a bit of weight I am back in the swing of things and have started working out again!  I am doing the Piyo program by Chalene Johnson.  This is an incredible workout because it's low-impact (no jumps!) and focuses on stretching and flexibility.  The name comes from Pilates and Yoga, though it is more than just a mix of those two disciplines.  I love that there is a modifier for every single move - and you can see her for every single move!  Sometimes workouts will have a modifier that is continually off-screen; it doesn't do you any good to not be able to see what they're doing though!  With this workout during pregnancy I am focusing on just doing my best and really using it as a time to relax, breathe and just get in touch with how my body is feeling each day.  I am not jumping or doing crazy things, and I am modifying anywhere I need to.  No shame in that!

Piyo in Pregnancy

When I first found out I was pregnant I was weighing in at 185 point something.  Today I am 189 point something.  This means I have gained about four pounds, but to me it looks like it has all centered right in my stomach area!  I suppose that is the place it is needed the most :)  My arms look the smallest the ever have and I haven't noticed weight gain in my face or legs, either.  I had good intentions of taking baby bump pictures absolutely every week so I could track my bump's progress but I haven't quite made good on that.  So I am changing that starting this week!  Here I am today!

18 weeks pregnant bump
I did manage to take a 14-week picture; here it is next to today's picture!  Pretty sure those four pounds have gone straight to my stomach :)

Weight: 189 (+4 pounds from 185)

Sickness: Little currently, though there are still bad days.

Cravings: Very few - none that are the over-powering insane cravings I hear some people talk about!

Food Aversions: Around month 2 I couldn't handle the thought of looking at yogurt, but that has gone away now!

Clothing fittings: I officially hate pants.  I have never been a fan of dress slacks, but now I really don't like them.  I am wearing dresses absolutely every day I possibly can at work, and when I'm at home I am likely to be found in pajama shorts.

Sleep: Sleeping has become the biggest struggle lately.  I have read that I should avoid sleeping on my back, but this is my natural go-to sleeping spot.  So I am trying to sleep on my side as much as possible - I don't know how people do this every night!  I wake up several times each night because the arm I'm sleeping on is sore, so I switch to the other side.  Often, this movement tells me that I also have to run to the bathroom - so let's just say that sleeping straight through for several hours is a rare occurrence!

Movement: None yet, though I'm not expecting any for another couple weeks!  Sometimes I'll feel awkward in my belly (strange, I know, but I'm not sure how else to describe it) and I wonder if that is the beginning of the 'butterflies' people mention.  I have no idea!

Emotions:  I think I have been pretty normal lately, though Jake might disagree.  Jake is raising beef cattle on the family farm, and last week the first animal went to the butcher.  Now I am not a vegetarian but for some reason this had me in hysterics on the couch! Bawling, sobbing, whatever you want to call it, that was me.  I was SO sad that this animal had to leave his friends and was going to miss out on the sun and their afternoons together.  Jake was able to calm me down but oh buddy that was an emotional ride!  I'll blame that one on the hormones :)

Workouts: As I mentioned before, I am doing Piyo and loving it, though I have to do a lot of the modified moves!

So that is where I sit as of week 18!  I can't wait to see what week 19 brings!

Be the First to Get PiYo Results

Piyo Release

Have you heard the news that there is a new program being released called PiYo?  If not, let me be the first to tell you about it!  If you already have, I hope you're as excited as I am!!!  PiYo will be the newest program by Chalene Johnson, who has already helped tons of people get healthier and fitter with her program TurboFire and Chalene Extreme.  TurboFire has been my go-to workout throughout this pregnancy so far, and I'm excited to add PiYo into the mix as well!  Sometimes the jumps get a bit too much for me in TurboFire - so it's going to be great to have a workout that doesn't include any!

I will be starting my PiYo journey after I get back from Beachbody's Summit event in Las Vegas this weekend and I would love to have you join me!  From everything I have seen and heard about PiYo, this is going to be a killer workout for people of ANY fitness level!  If you aren't up to jumps and high-impact exercises this will give you a chance to get in an incredible workout without feeling like you're missing out on all the action!  Even if you ARE up to some of the more crazy physical moves, this will still get you sweating and seeing amazing results.  It's truly made for everyone!

Before I started with some of the more high-impact workouts like Insanity, Les Mills Combat and Focus T25 I had an old pilates DVD that I loved.  This was one that I used in high school and dabbled in during summers home from college (granted, a lot of beer was consumed during these times as well, so the results weren't nearly what I might have liked!)  I haven't found a new workout that takes care of my joints, flexibility and stretching as well as that old Pilates dvd did - but I think Beachbody has just come up with the perfect solution!  It is important to remember that our joints need to be taken care of - after all, they'll be carrying us around for the rest of our lives!

Piyo

PiYo truly is for everyone.  You don't just have to take it from me, though - this is straight from Chalene Johnson herself!  My goal as a Beachbody coach isn't just to make the super fit even more fit - it is to help people who have struggled, are scared, nervous and apprehensive about starting out on a new journey.  I truly believe that THIS could be the program to make all those fears a thing of the past!  I have been in those shoes and believe me, I know they're not fun to walk around in.  I jumped straight into Insanity but I would have loved to have had this option!

If you have had previous injuries that you feel will hold you back from starting out with a high-impact workout, this is the ticket!  There is no jumping involved, so your knees won't be taking on a full assault.  This workout is about using your body, as it is right now, to strengthen and workout your body.

Chalene Johnson PiYo

So how exactly does this work?

PiYo requires no weights and no equipment, so this is a great way to get started on a fitness journey.  Once you have the program you have everything you need to start seeing results!  Each workout is only 25-45 minutes long, and the entire program lasts just 60 days.  60 days!  In just two months we will see crazy results using no weights, no equipment and only spending 25-45 minutes a day working out.

PiYo is being officially launched this weekend, and next Monday will be available exclusively to Team Beachbody members.  You won't be able to find this on Beachbody websites, on tv or anywhere else on the internet.  With me as your coach you will be able to start PiYo before anyone else - which means you'll get results before anyone else!!  Get me as your coach today!!!

Why Meal Plan?

Happy Monday everyone!  We have successfully completed the first day of the work week - remember this: only four more to go, only four more to go :)

With the help of some Zofran and avoiding any crazy foods over the weekend I had a relatively healthy couple days and it. felt. awesome.  As I was thinking about this last night, I decided that it is definitely time I get back into the meal planning and sharing game.  Being sick the last few months has limited my food intake but as I'm now (hopefully!) on the upswing I am eating more - which is great!  I do not want to fall into the "I'm pregnant and am going to eat anything I feel like eating" trap, though, because I want to have as healthy of a pregnancy as possible!

So what does that call for?  Meal planning!

Over the past year of coaching, I have noticed that people most often struggle with two things when they start on any health & fitness journey: 1) Being stubborn with their workouts (getting them in and making them a priority rather than an option) and 2) Meal planning for the best results.

Because this is where people struggle the most, this is where my job as a coach comes in!  I know without a shadow of a doubt that if you stubbornly stick to your workouts and meal plan you WILL see success!  So why do so many find it so hard to do the meal plan portion of it?

Why Meal Plan

Because, at the end of the day, it can be scary to get started.  Perhaps you've never put much thought into how to work a meal plan.  Maybe you're not sure what foods are acceptable and which should be avoided in non-cheat meals.  It could be that you want to save money and you don't see how you could possibly eat healthy and stick to a budget at the same time!  Is the family convincing you that you can't make healthy meals that everyone will eat?  Does your work day and home life make it seem like you're just too busy to do it?

Here is the solution: just do it!  Meal planning can help you in SO many ways.  You can control you and your family's food intake, which not only makes it healthier it also makes it - wait for it - cheaper!  If you know ahead of time what you'll be making each day that week, you won't have the "go to the grocery store and buy anything that you know anyone in the family likes so you can thrown a last-minute meal together every night of the week" shopping spree.

Meal planning not only is healthier, it can also be a major time saver!  If you know what you'll be eating ahead of time, you can take a small amount of time out at the beginning of the week and prep your foods for the rest of the week.  Then just throw them together and go!  Having veggies and almonds as a snack one day?  You can pre-chop the veggies and get the almonds divided out ahead of time!  Then when it comes time for your crustless quiche later on in the week, you will also have the veggies pre-chopped for that.  Hello TIME SAVER!!!

So how do you get started meal planning for health, weight loss or toning?  That is where I come in!  I have spent the last year meal planning, tweaking my system and finding new recipes.  I can give you a step-by-step beginner's guide as well as support along the way as you start on your health and fitness journey.  I have sample meal plans and ideas for how to find things that will work with your life, whether you have a picky eater at home, spend a lot of time on the road or simply don't enjoy cooking!

To top it all off, I can help you get stubborn with those workouts too!  Whether your goal is to simply live a more healthy live, lose the last 10 pounds or get started on losing a large amount of weight, I can help you!  The way to get started?  Take that very first step and let me know you want help!  To do that, all you have to do is fill out the form below for my upcoming challenge group and I will get back to you within 24 hours!

I can't wait to start meal planning with you!

Why Thursday is the BEST Day

Yep, the title says it all.  Thursday is my favorite day of the week.  Some people like Fridays, and while I have nothing against Fridays (who doesn't like the end of a work week??) I enjoy Thursdays more.  Same goes with Saturday.  Yes, I love being home or away and doing things that I want to do, but Thursdays have something about them that just make me happier.

Thursdays Rock

Why in the world is that, you ask?  Well, I'll tell you!

Thursdays are Beachbody's celebration AND paydays!

On Thursday mornings my Facebook newsfeed is always jam-packed with congratulations and announcements about other coaches who have hit milestones in their businesses.  They have hit new ranks in the business, which means that they are pushing forward and changing lives!

Beachbody Emerald Coach
My coach shared this on her wall when I hit emerald - it was awesome to be publicly recognized and celebrated!

As a Beachbody coach I help people in a lot of different ways - rank advancing shows that we as coaches are doing a good job at this and that we are moving forward in the business!  To be able to celebrate others' successes is one of the absolute best perks of the job!

Beachbody Diamond Coach
And here is my diamond congrats!!!

I won't lie, though.  I also love the fact that by helping people I am able to bring a third income into our home.  To know that I am able to do something I absolutely love doing and help support the family finances at the same time is incredible!

Now that I am going to be a mom, I realize that the finances will get tighter - Jake and I are responsible for raising and taking care of an entire new person!  Of course that will require more money.  But I know that Beachbody will make this much easier to handle, because every Thursday I can sign into my online banking and see another deposit towards the life I want to lead with my family.  Having extra breathing room in the budget doesn't mean we are frivolous - the exact opposite, in fact!  It means that we have more money to use to pay off bills and for a rainy day fund.

Car Payment

With just ONE week's paycheck from Beachbody I was able to pay my monthly car payment!  This is a raise I have given myself - leaving the funds from my 9-5 job open and available for other uses!

Winning?  I say yes!

So on this Thursday as I have celebrated other coaches' successes, I really started thinking about how much I love Thursdays - and how much I look forward to celebrating MY coaches' successes!  My coach made those public announcements to celebrate my success; now I want to do the same!

I am part of the number one team in ALL of Beachbody and I take that position seriously!  I am opening a brand-new coach apprenticeship program to train 5 in how you too can start loving Thursdays!

To be a coach you do not have to be a fitness expert and you do not have to be in the best shape of your life.  As your coach, I can help you get in better physical shape while also focusing on financial strength!  Being a coach means you have these traits - or are willing to work on them!

- Have a desire to help others
- Have goals that you'd like to hit sooner than your current situation will allow
- Enjoy seeing others succeed, and enjoy succeeding as well
- Are driven to make the most of your life
- Are willing to try something new

Does any of that sound like you?  Would you like more time at home and less time in the office?  Are you ready to pay off the student loans, car payments and credit cards for once and for all?  If yes, then I'd love to hear from you!

I have 5 spaces in this new group - I will give you one on one coaching and training - all you have to do is be willing to learn and try!

Below is a Coach Apprenticeship Application - if you are interested in learning more about how to get started coaching, please fill it out!  I will get back to you within 24 hours to discuss how coaching can change your life - as you change other lives!

What I Read in May

For anyone who doesn't know, I'm a big fan of books - I love reading and I love finding new books to read!  I love when fellow bloggers share what they've been reading, so I thought I would start doing the same.  Here are the books that I read in the month of May, followed by my rating out of 10.

What I Read

The Fault in Our Stars - John Green

The Fault in our Stars

This book was lent to me by my sister and I am not ashamed to admit that I spent a wonderful afternoon in our front porch reading the entire thing!  I didn't necessarily mean to, but it was a quick read and once I started it I didn't want to stop.  It had been a busy weekend so this was mine & Nugget's chance to relax for a bit while Jake was at the farm - I'll say we took full advantage of it :)
This book has a film version coming out soon, so when my sister mentioned she had it I jumped at the chance to read it before the movie is out.  I like reading books before seeing the movie so I can have my own take on it before I have Hollywood's.  This book was very good and, like I mentioned before, very easy to get through.  I have no problem admitting that I found myself absolutely sobbing at one point - it really had me invested in the characters!
This is the story of Hazel Grace, a girl battling cancer who means a boy, Augustus, who has seemingly beat his cancer (though it did claim one of his legs).  The Fault in Our Stars follows this pair as they grapple with cancer, support groups, falling in love and the effect literature can have on our lives.  I loved the characters, both minor and major, and I enjoyed following their journey.  I will definitely be seeing the movie when it comes out!
Rating: 8.5/10

Amaryllis in Blueberries - Christina Meldrum

Amaryllis in Blueberry

This was the latest book club book and although it took me a while to really get into, by the end I couldn't put it down - I had to see how it was going to turn out!  In our book club we tend to be cheapos (yes, I'll admit it).  One of us will go to the discout sections at Barnes & Noble where you can get books for only $4 or $5 and then buy enough for the entire club.  I have to say, it may be cheap but it has introduced us to books we never would have chosen but have now fallen in love with!
Amaryllis in Blueberries is the story of one family - mom Christina (Seena), dad Dick, and their four daughters, Mary Grace, Mary Tessa, Mary Catherine and Amaryllis.  In the beginning of the book Dick picks the family up and transplants them to Africa, where all their cracks and dysfunctions become much more visible.  There were times that made me sad, happy, angered and apathetic while reading the book but I did enjoy the story.  In the reviews someone mentioned that it is similar to The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver which I did read in college but honestly can't remember much of.  I may have to re-read that now though!
Rating: 7/10

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

After seeing a friend's Harry Potter Pinterest board I decided I must re-read the series - so the first book is the most logical place to start :)  Most of us know the general outline of the first book - a boy, Harry, has been living with his horrible aunt, uncle and cousin when, on his 11th birthday, a giant of a stranger informs him that he is a wizard.  He sets off for the wizard school Hogwarts where he meets new friends, struggles with homework, learns a new sport and comes face-to-face with his past.  The first of 7 books, this set the stage for all the adventures Harry would have while learning to be a wizard!
I can't say much bad about this book - I love it and always have!
Rating: 10/10

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - J.K. Rowling

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I just barely finished this one in the month of May, but I got it done!  I know a lot of people call this book as one of their least favorites of the series, but I'm actually a fan of it!  I love that it introduces Ginny in a big way - and Professor Lockhart always is good for a laugh.  In case there's a person or two out there who hasn't read the book or seen the movie, I'll leave any spoilers out - but if you are one of those people, I highly recommend you pick up the series immediately!
